The 4th Annual Kirkwood 5K Run/ Walk/ Push will take place in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Greensboro on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. This family friendly race will start and end at the Kirkwood Park (corner of Lafayette Avenue and Liberty Drive) and follow a fun, fast course through the lively Kirkwood Neighborhood.
All proceeds will benefit BackPack Beginnings, a 100% volunteer-run organization with a mission to provide children in need with nutritious food, comfort items or certain basic necessities through the use of backpacks and other efficient means of distribution.
In the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, over 975 students in Guilford County will receive backpacks full of nutritious, child-friendly food over the weekends from our Food BackPack Program. Last year an estimated 41,000, over 56 percent, of children in our schools qualified for meal assistance and over 8,500 children experienced childhood trauma such as abuse, neglect, homelessness, or refugee resettlement in Guilford County. Approximately 1,250 Comfort BackPacks will be distributed this year that will provide items such as socks, toys, books, stuffed animals, blankets, hygiene products and school supplies to these children in traumatic situations.
With the support of the Kirkwood 5K’s title sponsor, Charles Aris Inc, every race registration fee goes directly toward helping and feeding the children of Guilford County. “Charles Aris is excited to support BackPack Beginnings and the Kirkwood 5K again this year” says Allen M. Oakley, Vice President, Operational Effectiveness of Charles Aris, Inc. “Our entire team is passionate about the mission of BackPack Beginnings and the impact the organization has on our community at large. We look forward to running, walking and pushing at the K5K on August 24th!”
Participation in the Kirkwood 5K is open to adults and children. The cost for individual registration is $30.00 for adults and $15.00 for kids 12 and under. There is a $5.00 discount for registering before race day. Registration is available at www.kirkwood5k.org through August 19th. Check-in and registration will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on August 24th at Kirkwood Park. A Kids Fun Run is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the 5K, where awards will be given for the fastest male, female, child, stroller pusher, and Kirkwood resident.
This year’s race directors, Nathan Daughtry, Katie Kee, and Melanie Wright (the running group called the Woo Hoo Crew), have worked tirelessly to make this one of the best Kirkwood 5K’s yet. “We are really excited as a running group to be a part of this event and to give our time and efforts to something that truly gives back to our community. Life is an echo, what we send out is given back.”
We would like to recognize and thank this year’s presenting sponsor Charles Aris, Inc., for making this extraordinary race possible.
