Canned and nonperishable foods are so essential to keeping food pantries robust at our schools. Feeding hungry children is our number one priority and nonperishable items are a big part of that initiative. They have to be.
However, there are so many benefits of fresh foods that we really don’t want to ignore. We are incredibly fortunate to have partnered with The Produce Box and we are expanding our fresh foods program for the children in our community. We are excited to have a new FFI (Fresh Foods Initiative) chair, Tessa Kirkpatrick, leading the charge.
Our slogan, Fresh Foods = Fresh Minds, is based off of research that shows fresh fruits and vegetables improve children’s nutrition, help prevent childhood obesity and may improve school performance. We want our children in need to experience the benefits from fresh food.
We have already distributed over 3,000 pounds of fresh produce to children in 10 area schools. That is huge. HUGE. And we are excited to grow those numbers exponentially.
We don’t just want to feed hungry children, we want to feed them with healthy, fresh food that will help improve their development in countless ways.
Fresh foods. Fresh minds. Fresh new ways to meet hunger needs.
