Hunger is real

Over 49,000 Guilford County School children qualify for free or reduced price meals at school. The objective of our Food BackPack Program is to fight childhood hunger in our community by filling the weekend food gap for children in need.  Our program reduces the negative impacts of hunger so children are ready to learn in school and succeed in life.

The Need
  • 67% of children enrolled in Guilford County Schools are low income.
  • 17% of people in Guilford County are food insecure.
  • Guilford County has no state or federally funded weekend feeding programs for school children.
  • Hungry children incur delays in their physical, intellectual and emotional development.
Our Approach
  • We provide child-friendly, nutritious food directly to children in need over the weekends.
  • Children are enrolled annually from Elementary Schools or Head Start Programs in Guilford County.
  • All food is child-friendly, packaged in four set menus including milks, proteins, fruit, vegetable, cereals and 100% fruit juices.
  • Our organization is 95% volunteer run. Food is delivered each Thursday by 150+ volunteers so children have food for the weekend.
