Last year, I volunteered for BackPack Beginnings, and my role was to pick up and deliver food to the schools. I was working with Wiley Elementary for a 2nd year, and the school’s advisor told me how grateful her students are for the food they receive. It’s amazing knowing that the small role I play in BackPack Beginnings can make a big difference in these children’s lives.

Every August, the Kirkwood neighborhood hosts a 5K to benefit BackPack Beginnings. I live in Kirkwood, and I hope to help grow participation for this fundraiser because it makes a big difference on how many lives we can touch through BackPack Beginnings. The 2012 Kirkwood 5K raised over $17,000, enough to help almost 200 children in our county! Help us top that number there year! Join in on Saturday, August 24th for the Kirkwood 5K: http://kirkwood5k.org/

I hope to spread the word on how important BackPack Beginnings is in reducing and eliminating child hunger in Guilford County. It’s hard to believe there are so many children in our own county who don’t know if they are going to be able to eat this weekend or not.
