September is National Hunger Awareness Month, so BackPack Beginnings and the Bonner Leader Program at High Point University are uniting on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 7:00pm to view the movie “A Place at the Table” and to discuss hunger in the High Point community. Narrated by actor, Jeff Bridges, A Place at the Table shows how hunger impacts our nation and ways to end it.
The event is free. Invite your friends and family to join us on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the HPU Extraordinaire Cinema for an eye opening event.
Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity:
- A single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids
- A Colorado second-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school
- A Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford
Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all when Americans decide that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.
