New School for 2012: BackPack Beginnings is starting our weekly feeding program at Hampton Elementary in January 2012. This addition marks our 13th school! We are excited to continue to reach our goal of programs in all 12 Head Starts and 50 Title 1 schools in Guilford County. Thank you for your support in helping us reach our goal!

Book and Winter Hat, Glove and Coat Drive: In December, we wrapped up our book and hat, glove and coat drive. We handed out over 500 books and hundreds of hats and gloves to the children we are serving. Many thanks to those who helped make it happen: Guilford Education Alliance, Barnes and Noble, Young Professionals Group of High Point, Junior League of Greensboro, St. Pius, Wells Fargo, Summerfield Elementary, Grace United Methodist Church, Toys and Company and more! Thanks also to our Leadership Greensboro team and several other individualas for spending 4 hours sorting and delivering books, hats, gloves, scarves and coats. We will continue to collect these items year-round so please contact us at parker@backpackbeginnings.org if you have books, hats, gloves and coats you would like to donate.

Comfort BackPack Program:  In partnership with Leadership Greensboro, BackPack Beginnings is creating a new program to compliment our Weekly Feeding Program. The Comfort BackPack Program is currently being established to give backpacks full of comfort items such as pajamas, socks, snacks, toys, books, teddy bears, blankets, coloring books and crayons, hygiene products, and other items to children who have been displaced from their homes due to traumatic experiences. We hope to launch this program in the summer of 2012.

Volunteer Spotlight:  For the 2011-2012 school year, BackPack Beginnings has approximately 13 volunteers from the Junior League of Greensboro and 33 volunteers from High Point (including those from Williams Memorial Church, Kiwanis Club of High Point, and Community Bible Church) that deliver food to our 13 schools. They distributed over 1200 bags of food from August to December. Thanks for all your support that allows our program to grow!

Supporter Spotlight: We are so grateful for the tremendous support from our local community. Our newest supporters include B'nai Shalom Day School and Little Gym of Greensboro. Thank you for supporting BackPack Beginnings!
